Originally known as ASD Las Vegas, the ASD Market Week Trade Show launched in 1961 as a military surplus trade show. ASD initially stood for “Associated Surplus Dealers”. Today, the abbreviation is short for “Affordable Shopping Destination.”

Walter Fletcher established this trade group from the West Coast more than 45 years ago to represent military surplus retailers. He started off by organizing small trade shows in Santa Monica, California.

Soon, ASD added Associated Merchandise Dealers (AMD) to its name and became known as “ASD/AMD Trade Shows.” ASD/AMD quickly grew to become one of the biggest retail merchandise shows in the US.

In 1992, this Las Vegas trade show hit a record with an attendance of more than 40,000 buyers and 4,000 exhibitors.

Miller Freeman Inc. acquired the trade show in 1995. Then in 2000, VNU acquired Miller Freeman Inc. and, as a result, ASD, too.

The show kept passing hands from VNU to Nielsen to Onex, who renamed this arm of its business “Emerald Expositions” in 2013. Emerald still runs this trade show to date.

In 2017, the ASD Market Week partnered with the PROSPER Show, which is co-located in the Las Vegas Convention Center. This annual education conference caters to established Amazon Sellers to help them grow their business on the platform.
